"
The Beadnell Boat Club was founded in 1935, the prime mover behind
it's foundation was Major H. Burton who had, with his wife, completed
a circumnavigation of Britain prior to retiring to Beadnell. Both
Major and Mrs. Burton are now buried in Beadnell Churchyard.
The
Club had several boats moored at Beadnell Harbour and in conjunction
with the then fisherman held an annual Harbour Regatta up until
the outbreak of the Second World War.
The
Club restarted after the war and established an active section for
younger members which still continues today and is one of the strengths
of the club.
The
name was changed to the Beadnell Sailing club and purchased it's
present home on Harbour Road on which a clubhouse was subsequently
built and boat storage facilities established. Chain moorings for
members boats were laid at Beadnell Harbour and a regular programme
of racing was also established.
Dinghy
racing became very popular in the 1960's and 1970's principally
in National 12 and International 14 Classes. Members attended many
events throughout the country as well as organising the Annual Beadnell
Sailing Club Open Weekend for members of other clubs. In 1979 we
organised the Prince of Wales Cup Week for International 14's, in
which 84 dinghies from this and other countries attended.
From
1980 to the present date there has been a growth in the numbers
of boats using the club moorings. Boats have cruised from the Tyne
to the Forth as well as trailing their boats to cruise in Western
Scotland.
The
Club organises a regular programme of racing on a handicap basis
for all classes of yachts and dinghies and holds a Sailing Week
in August with racing, particularly for younger members, together
with an enjoyable social programme culminating in a Regatta."
