Beadnell
Village has an active branch of the Women's Institute. Many thanks
to Wendy Clark for the following brief history of the village branch
and their local activities.
The
main purposes of the Women's Institute Organisation are to enable
women who are interested in issues associated with rural life including:
-
arts, crafts and sciences, to improve and develop conditions of
rural life.
- to
advance their education in citizenship, in public life, both national
and international.
-
in music, in drama and other cultural subjects and in all branches
of agrigculture, handicrafts, home economics, health and social
welfare.
It
seeks to give all women the opportunity of working together through
the Women's Institute Organisation and of putting into practice
those ideals for which it stands. It's none sectarian and none party
political.
The
Beadnell W.I. was formed in 1923, it's first meetings being held
in the Craster Arms before being given a piece of land in Meadow
Lane Beadnell by the Craster Family. Here the present W.I. hall
stands along with the garden in memory of Minnie Craster.
The
hall has been greatly improved in the last decade and now, as the
only hall in the village, is used for most village events. At present
it is used by a bowls club, keep fit, a bridge club, an art group,
a yoga class, a step up group, the Parish Council, elections and
private parties as well as by the W.I. and various charities for
coffee mornings etc. (The hall is available for £5 per hour).
Our
monthly meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month with
the exception of August. Anyone is welcome to attend.
